PROFILE: LIMA: VÉRTICE GALERÍA DE ARTE
MIGUEL ZEGARRA

ESTABLISHED by Rosario Wenzel in early 2007, Vértice is a space dedicated to the exhibition and dissemination of contemporary Peruvian and Latin American art. It is renowned for its curatorial line, which coordinates the most recent tendencies in regional artistic production through a coherent programme of exhibitions, participation in international art fairs and events, and the circulation of the gallery’s permanent collection. The presence of one of Vértice’s artists at the 52nd Venice Biennale and the gallery’s participation in future international fairs, such as Buenos Aires Photo 2007 and arteBa 2008, will help endow the project with a strong international profile.

Vértice’s exhibition programme is notable for its global outlook and cultural focus. Examples of recently exhibited work include the video installation, Tuyo es el Reino [Yours is the Kingdom] (2007) by Patricia Bueno (representing Peru at this year’s Venice Biennale), which uses a hybrid language to reflect on discourses of power and history, Elena Damiani’s architectural digital project, ‘Sites’ (2007), which explores the relationship between nature and artifice, and the group show, ‘Frontera / under the skyline’ (featuring artists Marco Pando, Alfredo Márquez, Susana Torres, Nicole Franchy, Pier Stockholm, Natalia Iguíñiz, Christian Bendayán, Miguel Andrade and Chiara Machiavello), which interrogated the notion of frontier in a global cultural, political and geographic context. The exhibition ‘Bold’ by Diego Lama presented a photographic series based on the interplay between naked bodies and baroque architecture, while the Claudia Coca’s ‘Globo Pop’ show examined the treatment of images by the mass media, linking issues of ethnicity with the cultural and political hierarchies at work within global capitalism.

Vértice encourages the collection of contemporary art in Peru by providing a consultation and advice service to the Museo de Arte de Lima (MALI) and Contemporary MALI, the country’s main contemporary art project. Works by Peruvian artists proposed by the gallery have been added to the museum’s collection and included in exhibitions.

Vértice’s objectives for future years is to promote works by Peruvian artists on the international circuit, to exhibit the work of foreign artists locally and to continue consolidating the internal market, all of which will help contribute to discourses of contemporary art in Peru and beyond.
